Nintendo Entertainment System
The very first console I ever owned. And about as old as I care to go in a setup like this. Sorry Atari lovers! C64, Intellivision, ColecoVision... I have in fact played these systems, there's just nothing there for me. Quite frankly, anything that was any good will be available with better graphics and easier controls in at least one of the newer systems. If at some point I am completely done with everything else on this site, I may add a section with install tips for these systems.

NES is one of the many relatively easy setups. The hardest part may simply be deciding what core to use. There is four to choose from I believe. When setting up some systems, what core you use will matter. I don't think it really matters too much for NES. It is a very well known system emulation wise. I have been using Nestopia for many years now. It is known to be 100% "cycle accurate" so I chose that core.

Drop all your rom zips in:

R:\ARCADE\RetroArch-1.9.1-Win64\system\GAMES\Nintendo Entertainment System\

Next, fire up RA, download the core and try a couple of games to make sure they work.

Then make the usual RL settings:

You may or may not want to fix the database. Not a lot has changed with NES names in a long time so it shouldn't be too far off, if at all. The XML from HyperList has 791 entries. An updated XML I found had 885 entries. I have done a quick edit removing all the "eur" only,"unl", "demo", and "proto". I also did a couple of game renames like changing the original "Hudson's Adventure Island" to just "Adventure Island" so it shows up on the wheel beside the other 2 games. It has 671 entries in the XML.
